Benefits of Main Ingredients

The main ingredients in gingerbread cookies offer more than just deliciousness—they also provide a few health benefits. Ginger, a key spice in gingerbread, has been used for centuries for its potential digestive benefits and anti-inflammatory properties. It may help soothe upset stomachs and alleviate nausea. Additionally, molasses, another essential ingredient, contains vital minerals such as iron, calcium, and magnesium. It also provides a small amount of antioxidants and is lower in sugar compared to other sweeteners.

Ingredients

To create these delightful gingerbread cookies, gather the following ingredients:

• 3 cups all-purpose flour

• 1 teaspoon baking soda

• 1/4 teaspoon salt

• 2 teaspoons ground ginger

• 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

• 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

• 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

• 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

• 1/2 cup molasses

• 1 large egg

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

• In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves. Set aside.

• In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.

• Add the molasses, egg, and vanilla extract to the butter mixture. Mix well until combined.

• Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing just until the dough comes together. Avoid overmixing.

• Divide the dough into two equal portions and shape each portion into a disk. Wrap them individually in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or until firm.

• Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.

• On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disk of dough to about 1/4 inch thickness.

• Cut out desired shapes using cookie cutters and transfer the cookies to the prepared baking sheets, leaving a small space between each.

• Repeat the rolling and cutting process with the remaining dough.

• Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.

• Remove the cookies from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

• Once cooled, decorate the gingerbread cookies with icing or sprinkles if desired.

Notes:

• For an extra burst of flavor, you can add 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg or allspice to the dry ingredients.

• Allow the cookies to cool completely before storing them in an airtight container to maintain their crispness.

• Gingerbread cookies can be stored at room temperature for up to one week.

Enjoy the delightful taste and festive charm of these classic gingerbread cookies. They are perfect for sharing with loved ones or as a sweet treat during the holiday season!
