Benefits of Main Ingredients

The main ingredients in this beef lasagna recipe offer both taste and nutritional benefits. Lean ground beef provides a good source of protein and essential amino acids necessary for building and repairing tissues. Tomatoes, the base of the sauce, are rich in lycopene, an antioxidant that may help reduce the risk of certain cancers and promote heart health. Additionally, cheese, such as mozzarella and Parmesan, adds calcium and protein to the dish.

Ingredients

To prepare this classic beef lasagna, gather the following ingredients:

• 9 lasagna noodles

• 1 pound (450g) lean ground beef

• 1 onion, diced

• 3 cloves garlic, minced

• 1 can (28 ounces/800g) crushed tomatoes

• 1 can (6 ounces/170g) tomato paste

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• 1 teaspoon dried basil

• 1 teaspoon dried oregano

• Salt and pepper to taste

• 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

• 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

• Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Directions:

• Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

• Cook the lasagna noodles according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

• In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, and sauté until fragrant and translucent.

• Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it up into smaller pieces with a spoon. Drain any excess fat.

• Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried basil, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Simmer the sauce for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.

• Spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Place 3 lasagna noodles on top, slightly overlapping them.

• Spread a layer of meat sauce over the noodles, followed by a sprinkle of mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Repeat this layering process two more times, ending with a layer of meat sauce and cheese on top.

• Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.

• Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and lightly golden.

• Let the lasagna cool for a few minutes before cutting into squares. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired.

Notes:

• Feel free to add vegetables like sliced mushrooms, zucchini, or spinach to the meat sauce for added nutrition and flavor.

• Prepare the lasagna ahead of time and refrigerate it overnight. Simply adjust the baking time accordingly.

• This lasagna pairs well with a side of garlic bread and a fresh green salad.
